Barga
Gracious and peaceful small town with a noteworthy Cathedral overlooking the town, the small but superb Differenti Theater, the one thousand year old Pieve di Loppia and, a few miles away, the home of poet Giovanni Pascoli. It stages every year a week long opera event and a jazz festival.
Orrido di Botri
Natural canyon with a white water creek. from spring to fall it can be walked through with local guides. Spectacular and unusual, its steep cliffs are breeding ground for the Reale Eagle.
Castiglione
Very ancient village surrounded by walls built around 1371. St. Michele church with a Romanesque-gothic façade of colored marbles and two rows of arches. Every year on Maundy Thursday you can take part in the “Processione de’ Crocioni” (costume parade).
Museum of Rural Life
Located in the Castiglione territory at St. Pellegrino in Alpe, 1525 mt. asl, it is hosted in an ancient hostel referred to in a 12th century document, it has on display, in 14 rooms, more than 4000 objects of the rural civilization and reconstruction of old farmer’s houses and craftsmen shops.
La via Vandelli
Dedicato all’illustre poeta Ludovico Ariosto, che a Castelnuovo Garfagnana soggiornò come governatore della casa d’Este dal febbraio 1522 al marzo 1525 e che qui scrisse le sue famose Epistole, è una piacevole passeggiata nei dintorni di Castelnuovo. Durata 1h 30’, dislivello 250mt.
Garfagnana Train
A railroad line crosses the entire valley and makes it possible to reach Lucca and Pisa for a car free visit. The thermal town of Equi and other sights can also be visited by train. The nearest station is “Castelnuovo di Garfagnana” only 4 Km away.
